Episode 31: The Joys of Spring

spa
Sunday, March 29th at 11:04am:

Location: Logan’s Circle, NW
Scene: Diane in her car looking for a parking spot.

I was beginning to realize that I needed the patience of a bride searching Filene’s Basement for the perfect wedding dress, if I was going to find a parking spot at noon (aka peak brunch hour) on a weekend day in Logan Circle.  I only decided to put myself through this headache because Cindi thought it would be a good day to walk to the nail salon on U St. ‘We have to enjoy this unexpected spring weather’, she rationalized. I agreed since the forecast for the following week called for wind and rain, but after 30 minutes of searching to no avail, I was frustrated, thirsty and annoyed.  About to give up on my parking quest, I looked up at an empty spot only to see the ever present homeless guy signaling me to park there. Where was he a second ago and why did he think that this was his lucky day and without him I could not have found the spot myself?  (Which I did) When he saw me angling my car towards the middle of the space, he moved out of the way. When I stepped out of the car, he held his hands out for change.  When I did not give him any money, he said something about messing with my tires. When I heard that, I got in the car again and told Cindi to bring me a bottle of water for my thirst and that we would be driving to U St.  Go figure.

On U we were able to surprisingly find parking right away since those attending church services were all in the process of moving their cars. Finally Murphy was on my side.

As I stepped into the Shangri-la Day Spa, I was led to an empty pedicure station. The warm water on my feet was just the de-stressor that I needed. I sat back as the nail technician started the seat massager and proceeded with the task of making my feet beautiful.  I was in heaven. I tried not to think about Jaz’s book club meeting this afternoon, but that was an unattainable goal.  Neither Cindi nor I had read the assigned book, “Act like a Lady, Think like A Man” by Steve Harvey. Jaz was sure to be upset with us, but although she was gung-ho about this latest project, I gave her a month to tire of it or until the start of summer when the need to parade on the Washington Harbour in Georgetown on a Sunday in a floral halter dress topped her priority list.

Sunday, March 29th at 11:51am:
Location: Shangri-la Day Spa, U St., NW
Scene: Diane and Cindi getting their nails done.

The call from Chris this early on a Sunday was unexpected. I let it go to voicemail. I called him two weeks ago and he was only now returning my call. I knew since last week that I no longer wanted a relationship with him but the question still remained as to how I would break it off. He started, “hey honey, are you home right now? I thought I would stop by for a second or two.” I rolled my eyes and pressed the “delete” button. The more I speak to him the more I realize he enjoys being single and has no intention of settling down anytime soon.  I guess I should have known this was the case when we started dating, but I chose to ignore the signs of always wanting to be by himself, no interest in doing what I wanted to do and disappearing for days even weeks on end. Time to move on!

I turned to Cindi to see if she was ready to go but she was refilling her acrylics so I knew we had at least 30 minutes to go before we could leave. I opened the latest Cosmopolitan magazine and started to read the mindless relationship tips. I guess I will need them for my next try.

Episode 26: The Inauguration

Peace

Peace

Thursday, January 15th at 12:31pm:

Location: Café Asia, 1720 I Street, NW

Scene:  Diane and Cindi eating sushi at restaurant and talking.

“Ok, so I think I found us tickets to the Mid-Atlantic Inaugural Ball!” Cindi blurted as soon as she sat down barely removing her grey wool coat.

“How did you do that? I thought it was one of the invitation only events. This better be good because some people are willing to stand outside in the cold for days to get these tickets and kiss any willing behind.  So, whose butt are you kissing?” I said staring at her with a smirk.

I knew she would start off by telling me something to the effect that she was only looking out for us, that we couldn’t miss any opportunity to meet the beautiful and professional (hopefully) men who would be descending on the city all dressed up in their tux and dapper fineries. Hmm mmm…we should probably add a hopefully to the beautiful part of this scenario as well, come to think of it. Overall, new faces to flirt with are always a single girl’s dream.

Cindi started, “getting the tickets was a little tricky but it will be worth it in the end.  You, me and Jaz are going to have so much fun!” she exclaimed.

“Suuuure, so who did you get them from?” I stopped chewing on my Tuna Maki to give her the sideways stare. Truth be told, I did not care who the tickets were from, I was just happy we were all able to attend. And I was not surprised that Cindi was able to pull off the tickets, since she was pretty resourceful when she really wanted something.

She responded at probably two or three hertz’s below an auctioneer, “well I was going to ask my boss if he knew of a way to get the tickets.  Aidan walked into my office to drop off some papers and while he was there we started talking about the Inauguration. He mentioned that he was going to two of the Balls. I asked him, how was that possible because he mentioned the ones with the hardest tickets to come by. Then he mentioned that his dad was a lobbyist who had donated lots of money to the campaign as an individual.  And so, because of the amount he had donated he was given five tickets to two events and would only attend one. So he gave Aidan all the tickets to the Mid-Atlantic and Aidan offered three to me.  So, that’s how we get to go.  Fun, huh?” She finished and I realized that all I heard was Aidan and fun and huh.

“Oh boy, I guess the excitement that day will not only surround Obama! This will be interesting. I’ve got my dress so I am game!” I uttered a spasmodic laugh and I toasted to the ball with her smiling and shaking my head, while catching a swift glimpse of apprehension on her countenance.  In a nanosecond it had disappeared. I wonder if her knowing what Aidan’s dad did for a living made his overtures less repulsive.

Tuesday, January 20th at 4:02pm:

Location: Cindi’s Apartment, Logan Circle

Scene:  Diane, Cindi and Jaz preparing for the ball.

“Darling, did you see the ambulance outside your building?” I asked Cindi as I entered her apartment simultaneously laying down my bags and Inauguration Day collectibles.

“I think my neighbor fell down the stairs. It was weird since I did not realize he was sick. Hopefully those crazy kids in the neighborhood were not bothering him.” She noted and the asked, “Jaz, where is your Ball gown?” as we both looked at Jaz who was holding up a black hippie style skirt and wrap style silk shirt.

My only response was to laugh out loud at the scene because I knew Cindi was just upset–because Jaz was recycling a few items from her closet and did not buy anything new to wear.

“Whatever! Don’t knock my outfit.  It’s fab and you’re jealous.” Jaz stuck her tongue out kindergarten style and walked towards the bathroom.

“Okay, let’s hide the skirt and find her something from my closet! We are not going to have these pictures taken for posterity with her next to us looking like a hippie. Did standing in the cold all day get to her brain?” Cindi sounded frustrated.  She was probably just trying hard to now make a good impression on Aidan and his friends. “Do you think she will fit into this fabulous black Byron Lars dress I purchased from Everard’s Clothing in Georgetown but never wore?” She continued, pulling the satin dress out of her closet.

“It’s up to you,” I shrugged. “I think there is nothing wrong with the outfit she chose. After a spiritually uplifting day as today I will not be judging anyone. Didn’t Obama say something about ‘unity of purpose over conflict’?”

At that moment, Jaz walked out of the restroom wrapped in her robe.

“Jaz babes, here are some goodies I laid out for you while you were taking your shower. What do you think?” Cindi was so determined that she just might get her feelings hurt.

“What! Hey, if you are offering, then I am taking. Hand the dress over and by the way, are you expecting it back?”  Jaz was excited while Cindi rolled her eyes and headed to the restroom to start her preparation ritual.

Jaz turned to me, “if I knew that wearing one of my gypsy skirts was all it took for Cindi to hand over one of her nicer dresses, I would’ve worn it a long time ago.”

We both started laughing. I could tell already that the evening would be equally amusing as the preparation process was becoming.

Tuesday, January 20th at 7:10pm:

Location: Mid-Atlantic Inaugural Ball, Washington Convention Center – Hall A

Scene:  Diane, Cindi and Jaz at the ball.

When we left Cindi’s apartment out of the corner of my eyes I noticed the boys she was referring to earlier. Thankfully we were able to grab a cab on 14th. They gave me the chills but that was neither here nor there. I put all thoughts of them aside when we entered the ball room.

“Hey Aidan, these are my friends Jaz and Diane.” Cindi introduced us to the tall, lanky Krispy Kreme donut tanned guy who was cute in a “golly Beave” kind of way.

We both said, hi but I guess she was taken aback when he introduced us all to his friend Nicholas who was preppy-cute with rimless glasses and a complexion of hot chocolate with an equal amount of milk and chocolate. Jaz walked away because she was still not in the dating or flirting mood, Cindi on the other hand was stuck with Aidan who proceeded to grab her hand and guide her to the dance floor while low and behold I was left with Nicholas who gladly agreed to walk with me to grab some food. I waved good bye to Cindi all the while smirking to myself because I knew she was just now beginning to feel stuck as she bopped away with Aidan who could not get his hands and legs to coordinate and move to the beat of the same song.

Episode 23: Strange Bed Options

A Study of a Caribbean Beach in December

A Study of a Caribbean Beach in December

Friday, January 2nd at 7:23am:

Location: Diane’s Father’s home in Boston

Scene:  Standing in the living room with her bags.

“Dad, are you ready to head out?”

I had been calling him for the last 15 minutes. My flight leaves in 3 hours but I was just afraid of the walking into another web of chaos at the airport.  I remained impatient although Carmela had accepted the mission to pull him away from his study and the telephone. He was unofficially working from home today.  I would have asked my step brothers to take me to the airport but they had already taken off with the speed of running bulls when their college buddies suggested spending New Year’s Eve in New York. It had been kind of nice just the three of us in the house over the last few days.  A rarity though they’ve been married for six years now. Carmela gave great advice on my Chris situation and I was going to open myself more to a romantic relationship with him.

“One moment,” he called from the top of the stairs, “I just need to put on my shoes and we should be on our way.”

Thank goodness!

Sunday, January 4th at 10:44am:

Location: Busboys and Poets, 5th and K St., NW Washington, DC

Scene:  Ladies on top floor couch sipping on hot chocolate and reading the paper.

“Did you all hear about the dress registry website?” Jaz lazily flopped one of her booted feet on the couch. I could tell by looking at her knees that she had a great tan from her vacation home in Miami.

“No. I’ve been a hermit the last few days. What about it?” Cindi responded.

“It’s the best idea ever! Events are listed on a website and women who plan to attend can add the dress they plan to wear with dress details and a picture to the site.  For one of the Inaugural Balls someone listed that they are wearing an H&M dress.  Now, I am all for making sure some other diva does not show up with the same dress at the same event, but what diva would want someone else to know how much they actually paid for a super fabulous outfit.”  She explained with eye rolls using her hands to express how appalled she felt.

“Hilarious indeed!  I will have to check it out. So, Cindi how was your vacation? Your tan looks great by the way darling.” She was seating in front of me more relaxed than I’ve seen her in a long time, red turtle neck, gold hoop earrings, hair in a ponytail and a slight brush on her lips of her favorite MAC lip gloss.  I wonder who the guy is.

“My vacation was great.  The family was together with my grandparents for the first time in four years. Grandma looked healthy after a scary stay in the hospital at the beginning of the month. Yvonne got to show off her engagement ring to the cousins. We partied till the sun came up just about every night for a week. Good times.” She nonchalantly stirred her hot chocolate.

I gave her a sideways glance, scrunching up my nose Samantha the witch style. I did not believe her. “Really and what else has been going on since you’ve returned?” I continued. Jaz’s head finally popped up in my direction periscope style.

“Nothing.” She squinted at me, “just vacation afterglow. I did see Jamie Foxx on the flight back. He is so cute.”

“Are you kidding me? Please don’t let me regurgitate my breakfast. Every time I see him on the blogs pouring drinks down a girl’s throat I think classy <air quotes>. He seems like the kind of guy who would purposely ride on the packed train car just to cop a secret feel.” Jaz spat her criticism and finished with another elaborate eye roll.

“Well, I still think he’s cute and would not hesitate to get secretly copped if the opportunity knocked.” She continued with a sly smile. Jaz turned the page of the Post style section obviously trying to ignore her response.

“How is Aidan?” I was still suspicious that something was brewing with that relationship and did want to get thrown off the scent.

“My goodness, you are like my second mother! Ok, so I have been sleeping with Aidan. I’ve just been too embarrassed to tell you ladies. I should have never taken things to home base with him.  But anyways I ended it this morning and so I am wearing a happy color.” She ended puffing out her chest and smoothing out her cashmere turtle neck. “Peruvian Connection by the way.” And so was the end to the revelation.

“Hmmm…the big reveal finally. We knew there were holes in the story you told us a few weeks ago.” Jaz nodded in my direction.

I shook my head, “maybe for 2009 we will have to work on getting you a serious man.”

“I know. You are probably right but we shall see.” I knew deep down she was in it for the chase and there was no chance of her staying in a relationship for more than the three month mark.

Episode 22: Cupcakes and Love Hugs

bakedwiredMonday, December 22nd at 7:23am:
Location: Diane and Chris at Reagan National Airport
Scene: Lots of people everywhere and moving in different directions.  Bags and luggage are strewn all over the floor.

“Oh my, are you ok!?” Chris was carrying my bag into National Airport and trying to hold my hands at the same time.  Go figure, it was kind of awkward and boyfriend/girlfriend-ish but I went along.  His masculine hands on mine provided the comfort and warmth of a pair of cashmere gloves. You could say I was literally warming up to him. My thoughts of other guys slowly drifted away on the wings of the cold wind as we walked through the doorway of the airport.  Upon entering we both stopped abruptly as if crazy glued to the floor. There were people everywhere like sheep in a pasture without a shepherd. As we looked on at the crowd, we heard a loud thud and sound of metal gliding across the floor. It seems like our unexpected stop literally threw a woman running from one end of the airport to the next for a loop. After her fall I helped her stand up while Chris searched for her glasses orienteering based on the direction of the earlier sound it made.

“This is not going to be a good day.” She started crying and slouched over like a teddy bear unable to sit up straight.  “My flight leaves in half an hour and I still have to wait in line to check my bag. My flight yesterday was cancelled. And now I am bruised all over.” At that moment Chris handed her glasses to her unscratched and with another apology. I was able to gather from her morning tribulation recounting how not to maneuver the checking-in process amid the gathering hoard.  Fortunately, Chris using his charisma to the utmost was able to get her to the front of the line. Thank goodness I had no bags to check or this was would have indeed turned into the longest day.

“Diane, here I got this for you.” As I completed checking-in at the kiosk, Chris handed me a white paper bag containing cupcakes from Baked and Wired in Georgetown and a venti Chai latte from the nearby Starbucks.

“So, that’s what was in the bag you took from the car. When did you have time to grab these cupcakes? They are my favorites.”

“I know. Grabbed them yesterday while you were packing and I had that quick ‘errand’ to take care of for the restaurant.” He said with a knowing grin.

“Well thank you. These will be much appreciated by me and the family.”

We walked together towards the security check point and as I entered the line we hugged and kissed goodbye.  Maybe I should go out of town more often.

Monday, December 22nd at 8:55am:
Location: Diane at her dad’s house in Boston, Massachusetts
Scene: Diane arriving home to her stepbrothers, father and stepmother. Ice and snow blanket the ground.

“Hey Dad, I am finally here!” I called from the driveway after my over priced cab ride home from the airport an unwelcome side effect of the ice storm.

“How did you get here so quickly? We were just about to leave for the airport”.

“The plane landed 30 minutes ahead of schedule and so I decided that I would save you a trip. Plus the charge on my phone is low. I’m outside so can you or one of the boys help with my bag?”

“No prob. Do you have enough money for the fare”?

“Yes, I do.” I looked up to see him coming down the driveway with Sam one of my stepbrothers. Both bundled up in their goose down jackets, sweats and boots. It was clear as they moved in robotic fashion down the stairs and towards the driveway, that they had recently gotten out of bed.  They each grabbed one end of my bag trudging through the snow as I made a beeline to the house and a speedy trail to the fireplace enjoying the warm embrace of the emanating heat. I was surprised the room was so fully decorated with both a Christmas/holiday tree and a Jewish Menorah.  I then said hello to Carmela, my stepmother.  As usual she was bent over the stove. I noticed the flavorful smell of her ropa vieja bubbling through the room. We hugged and although she was all of 5 feet and I had to stoop a little to fully get my arms around her torso she gave the feeling of home that had been missing from our lives since the death of my mom.

“It smells good in here! I like the tree.”

“Yeah. Your dad and I decided to be more traditional this year even though we won’t actually go into the religious celebrations.” I opened wide as she placed a spoonful of sauce and meat in my mouth.

“That’s really yummy.”

“Buzz, Buzz.” That must be my phone, probably Cindi or Jaz.  We were all heading to our respective family homes for the holidays.  Whoa! It was actually Chris.

“Hey! How’s it going? I just arrived home.”

“Glad to hear that. Gee Diane thanks for calling and letting me know.”

“Darling, I’m so sorry. I was so focused on making it home safe and fast since there was ice everywhere that I did not even tell my dad until I pulled into the driveway.” I was not used to hearing him so concerned.

“Well I am happy you are ok. I just wanted to make sure that you arrived safely. The meteorologist mentioned that that ice storm should be getting a little worse.  Well, take care. Let’s talk later.”  As we hung up I turned to see Carmela staring at me.

“So, who was that?  Sounds like he is really worried about you, missy.”

“Ummm, maybe.”

“Well, go change into something more comfortable and come back down so we can talk.”

“By the way, here are some cupcakes my friend gave me this morning. You will really like them.”  I left the bag on the counter top and ran upstairs thankful to have some time away to clear my mind of all that happened this morning.  I was still afraid to let my guard down with Chris. Getting hurt was never fun.

Episode 21: Show Me Who You Are…

A Study of 24th and M Street
A Study of 24th and M Street

Sunday, December 7th at 12:23pm:

Location: Blue Duck Tavern, 24th and M Street, NW

Scene: Diane and Chris have arrived at the restaurant early for their brunch date with Jaz and Cindi. They are sipping on Mimosas.

“Darling, I pass this hotel on the way to my physician all the time and I’ve never noticed this restaurant before.” I noted looking around at the modern yet traditionally decorated restaurant spotting the artisan bread laid out in the kitchen below the lounge where we sat.

“I think you will like the brunch offerings here. It might not be your usual fare but it will nonetheless be a delightful treat for your taste buds.  Next summer, we should come here together. One night a week they roast an entire pig, believe it or not and it’s absolutely delicious.” Chris noted while drinking the last of his mimosa. I took a moment to admire the delicate connection of a small fuzz of hair from his wrist peaking through his blue stripped shirt sleeve while touching his hands adding to the nerve ridged and sinew bulged masculinity, a contrast to his delicate grasp of the glass while he drank. My eyes wondered to his well groomed finger nails.  He was always well polished.  I’d never dated a guy so well groomed.  It made me nervous that he would be appalled if he noticed any of my out of place eyebrow hairs or week overdue bikini wax. He says he does not care but that is left to be believed as we have not moved beyond being just occasional daters.

I thought to myself, did he just say next summer, as in he is planning ahead. Breathe in…wait a minute this is Chris, I almost forgot he talks a lot and gets excited about things like restaurants and food and he may say things that end with no follow through. Umm, think I will go into my Missouri state, and wait till he shows me he is really planning ahead with me and as a result wants to have a serious relationship.

“Hey you two how are you doing?” Jaz proclaimed as she walked into the restaurant with Cindi. They were being led to where we were lounging by the hostess.

Chris stood up almost instantly and I began to make the introductions. Since we started dating he had never met Jaz.  Cindi and I met him together but that was late one night at his restaurant so it was like she was seeing him for the first time. After the introductions, we were then led to our table.

“So, mister food know-it-all what is good on the menu?” I asked noticing unlikely brunch items like whiskey cured Coho Gravlax.  The choice of where to eat was Chris’s as usual, he would have it no other way.

“You’d be surprised to hear me say this but the grits here are really nice and creamy with a thick consistency due to the cheddar cheese folded into the sauce. They are actually better than the ones at the Georgia Browns brunch buffet.” He also noted for good measure highlighting his broad knowledge of Washington restaurants. He continued “actually everything here tastes good and is fresh so feel free to try something new. I am going to get the Irish breakfast and the grits.” He said continuing to examine the menu.

Sunday, December 7th at 2:48pm:

Location: M Street Georgetown

Scene: Diane, Jaz and Cindi walking from store to store.

We expected to be assaulted by absentminded cab drivers while driving down M Street but instead we had to contend with throngs of tourists either just visiting or commencing their early holiday shopping. We finally found parking outside of the MAC store on M Street.

“Ladies thanks for coming with me to take care of these quick wedding related errands. Glad you are both here because I wanted to talk about Aidan and work without Chris overhearing.” Cindi noted. As her sister’s maid of honor, she was slowly descending into full wedding planner mode.

“I understand. It was good hanging out with Chris but sometimes I think all he wants is someone to show off his restaurant knowledge to.  To be honest, he is great but I am going to start looking for another guy.” I thought out loud.

“Whatever Diane, I see the way you look at him and how he looks intently at you when you are just saying ‘pass the butter please’. There is more between the two of you so just give it time. I think sometimes we just need to be patient at the start of a relationship.” Cindi noted sounding like she has been seeking advice from her soon to be married sister. Without fail expertise comes with the engagement ring. “At least you don’t have to worry about fooling around with your co-worker only to realize that he does not respect you and that he went ahead and told someone your same year at the firm that you are sleeping with him.” She revealed.

“You’re sleeping with him? Are you out of your mind!” Jaz stated while pausing and changing her mind about entering the MAC store for a quick look around. “A few weeks ago you were annoyed that he was too forward but you are still moving on with a relationship with him. I am so confused Cindi.  This could ruin your professional reputation.”

“We’re not sleeping together he is lying and/or delusional! All we’ve done is kiss at the office and I’ve been avoiding him for the past week or so. My friend at work told me what he said and I pretended to not know what she was talking about.” Cindi exclaimed as Jaz became quiet and we started walking to the Restoration Hardware store. I did not think we would get much bridal registry work done at all.

“You have to sit him down and make it clear that there is nothing between the two of you and avoid him like the plague. Pretend you did not even kiss him when you are both in public and find some other guy to go to the firm Christmas party with to send the message to everyone especially him.” I responded after quickly reflecting on what was going on.

Episode 14: Back Together Again

u-street-washington-dc

Saturday, October 11th at 12:34pm:

As I was pulling into the only available parking spot on K St. that I could locate after about ten minutes of driving around the block, I got a call from Jaz who I expected was already at the restaurant since she had left her home in Columbia Heights thirty-minutes ago. We had made plans to have a girls-day-out with Cindi and decided to start off with brunch at the new Busboys and Poets restaurant on 5th and K St. followed with shopping on U. St.

“Diane where are you?” Jaz sang happily into the phone.

“I just found parking a block away from the restaurant! I should be there in less than five minutes. Cindi will be about fifteen minutes late since her morning of pampering at the Four Seasons in Georgetown is taking longer than expected.” I said excitedly since I too was in a great mood and just happy to have my two best girls back and available to hang out. It had been over a month or so since we all hung out together. Cindi had been working major hours at her firm getting ready for a trial that was now thankfully going to settle and Jaz found out George, her boyfriend of eight years had been cheating on her using Match.com so she had just taken a break and gone home to visit her family.  Drama!

“Darling, did you get us a table? I heard from my friend Janice that the restaurant was packed when she stopped by yesterday. I was afraid that we might have to wait a while for a table today.” I said while locking my Jeep and walking towards the restaurant. Noticing how much gentrification was already evident in the surrounding neighborhood.

“No worries. I have that department covered. I am at our table now. I figured I would just sit and wait for you both knowing full well how crowded BB&P can be.” Jaz reassured noting our nickname for the popular local restaurant, bookstore and poetry hotspot.

It was great to hear that Jaz was in a better state now that she had been able to visit with her family. Even though she was quick to note that they were driving her nuts and she had to make her quick escape when they tried to recruit her to help manage her brother’s campaign for republican Representative to Congress knowing full well that she was a democrat.

Saturday, October 11th at 12:40pm:

“So, how are you doing darling?” I asked Jaz, “at least you look rested and tanned,” I continued also noting her cute, brightly colored outfit. She was fond of oranges, browns, yellows and other bright colors that went well with her honey complexion.

“I am well and glad to be back. I have some good news but I will wait until Cindi gets here.” She explained while looking around at the artwork around the restaurant. This location is surely now our new favorite hangout!

“Now, I am curious, but I can wait. I need to take a beach trip soon to reinforce my summer tan before my paleness wears in.” We both giggled over my last comment. Being part Jewish and part African-American and leaning more in skin tone towards my Jewish father did not obviously bode well for keeping a natural tan in the winter.

“Hey Divas!” We looked up to see Cindi looking happy and glowing probably due in part to an hour long massage and freshly moisturized face.

Saturday, October 11th at 12:59pm:

“Ok Jaz, we’ve just placed our order so you must tell us your big news.” I asked impatient from waiting.

“I got the lead part in a spring 2009 production at the Studio Theater!” she exclaimed.

“Awesome! I am so glad for you. You definitely deserve some wonderful news in your life.” I noted as we all high-fived!

“Now I am definitely in a dessert mood!” Cindi exclaimed.

“I will second that.” Jaz piped in.

“Can I tell you both a random story?” I said anticipating their full attention. “So, why did I go to Champs with Janice a few days ago and was hit on by a guy named Joseph. I’ve never before been hit on by a guy with the same name as my dad. He was cute, fine and tall with a great smile and a great conversationalist. Just the way I like them, but I could not stop thinking that if we were to ever get intimate and he said ‘who’s your daddy?’ I could never answer him and would have to die a thousand deaths!”

“Whoa! Never thought of that before. Did he have a middle name? You could always answer that, if you ever got to the point where he would ask you this question.” Cindi said while chuckling.

“I have no idea! I just did not want to go there. The thought was nauseating!” I said also not being able to stop laughing.

“Guys in this city suck anyway!” Jaz noted. Thankfully, our chai lattes arrived as a welcomed distraction before she became too sullen.

Saturday, October 11th at 2:38pm:

“Let’s all take my car to U. St.” Cindi noted. It sounded like a plan because after my buckwheat pancakes I was too full to drive.

Our first stop was Dekka, a co-op boutique featuring independent designers and artists.  It is a great place to go if you are a Diva looking for a one-of-a-kind wardrobe addition. And since our goal was hanging out later that night at the Layla Lounge in NE, we definitely needed diva divine stand out in the crowd outfits. So, I purchased a cute, short, navy blue dress from the Yo Soy fashion line with chain links in the back which allowed me to show off my legs. All that yoga had to be good for something!  The color went well with my left over summer tan. Jaz was still obviously hesitant about getting back on the proverbial dating horse but she still could not resist buying a silver, chiseled textured cuff from Golden Plum Designs Cindi being who she was opted for the sophisticated ruffled open front Fiona dress from Moojoo Ken.

We ended the shopping trip people watching for a few hours outside of Mocha Hut. I could not wait for our evening of fun. With the three of us together there are bound to be great laughs but hopefully not too many gaffes.

Episode 12: Betrayal Confirmed

dc-metro-map(First Timer? Read from the start)

Friday, September 19th at 11:00pm

Tap! Tap! Tap! “Oh that must be the door. Jaz, I will be right back,” I uncoiled myself from the lotus position and half walked and stretched my legs on my way to open the door.

At the door, Cindi asked while whispering “How is doing? Is she OK?”

Lowering my voice as well, I responded “She is doing a lot better now. Not crying as much. She is debating calling and asking him right now about his Match.com profile and his cheating on her, but I told her maybe she should confront him face-to-face that way she can better gauge his reaction.”

“Not sure if she should wait. Well anyway, let me in I want to show her the goodies I brought with me.”

“Hey sweetie, how are you doing?” She exclaimed walking into the room making a beeline to a sullen Jaz curled up on the couch swaddled in my favorite quilt. “I brought you some junk and some Sex and The City. They are right here when you need them.” Cindi noted as she placed her bounty on the coffee table.

On cue, I walked to the kitchen to grab some plates, napkins and bottles of water. On my way back to the living room, I noticed that Jaz was now sitting up and sobbing.

“I can’t believe he would do this to me, to us.  Crap! I would have even understood if he wanted to take a break or not date anymore. But to cheat?! What a loser! What did I ever see in him?” And with that outburst she swigged half of the bottle of water.

“Hon, so what are you going to do?  Diane was saying that you wanted to wait to talk to him later?” Cindi inquired. I could already tell that she did not think that was a good decision and that the fighting litigator in her was getting ready to roar.

“I am really upset, but I am going to wait to talk in person.  He  texted me ten minutes ago that he wanted to stop by tonight after quote, unquote – hanging out with his friends. So, I am going to head home in a few to confront him. I copied and pasted his profile in an email to myself, as proof. Gosh, I am so annoyed!  I don’t even know how I can tell my mother!”

“Hello, Jaz darling what is going on? How did the talk go?” I said after calling her still half asleep.

“We’ve been arguing for hours. He finally left a few minutes ago. He admitted to dating other women for the past two years.  He said he was only doing it as an ego boost but that none of these relationships were important to him.  He claims there was only heavy petting involved. ‘I still love only you baby’ he said over and over. At this point I don’t believe him. He says we should go to a counselor and not throw away eight years. But, I feel like such a fool. Two years and over ten women, maybe more!  His best friend AJ even knew what he was doing all this time and no one told me. They must think I am a stupid. I am so sick about the whole situation.” She said tearfully.

“Do you want me to come over?” I was thinking that she should not be by herself.

“Ummm…not really.  I just need to be by myself right now.” Sniff. Sniff. “I just have to take all of this in. It’s all so new. I am 29 years old. He and I dated ever since my last year in college. My entire twenties I could’ve dated other people! I even thought he would pop the question when I turned 30. To think that I could’ve married someone I never really knew is scary. How did I miss the signs?” She said all this and just went silent.  Then I heard her in the background fiddling around.

“What are you doing?” I asked curiously.

“Getting his stuff ready to dump in the trash room. I never want to see him again!”

I stayed on the phone with her until early in the morning. She needed to talk and I so I just listened also in shock at all that was happening to her relationship. In the end, at least physically all reminders of him were no longer at her place. I still had to remind her to change her locks the next day but after we both got some sleep.
